Love for LARCs

Hey you. Yes, you! Pull up a chair and get comfy because today we’re talking about LARCs.

Wait, what?

Yes. LARCs or Long Acting Reversible Contraceptives.

Okay. Still -- what?

You’re not alone if you haven’t heard about LARCs before – it’s not really something that people talk about, unless y’all are, then kudos! LARCs are sort of like the coolest, yet most mysterious person you follow on Instagram. Let’s break it down.

Contraception is another word for birth control. When we are talking about LARCs, we are talking about birth control that is long acting, which means these forms of birth control can prevent pregnancies for years. It’s also reversible, which means you can choose to stop using the birth control method when you need to or when you decide the time is right.

There are two main LARC methods. One method is the IUD, or the intrauterine device. Warning: if you say “intrauterine device” at your next clinic visit, you may blow some people’s minds. The IUD is a small, plastic or copper T-shaped device that is placed in the uterus. This little T-shaped scientific wonder is over 99% effective at preventing unintended pregnancies. Depending on the type of IUD someone gets, it can be 99+% effective for between 3 to 10 years. The second method is the Implant, or a matchstick-sized rod that is placed under the skin on the inside of your upper arm. This method is over 99% effective as well and is effective for up to four years. You go Glen Coco!

Still not convinced that LARCs are awesome? Here are five reasons that may change your mind:

1. LARCs are sometimes referred to as a “set it and forget it” birth control. Instead of worrying about taking a pill everyday (no shade if you prefer the pill – love to all those who use what is best for them), LARCs are placed, or set, in the body and you don’t even have to think about it for years. Set it. Forget it. Boom. You’re done.

2. LARCs are 99+% effective at preventing pregnancy. If we could get a 99+% on our exams without even trying, then shoot. Sign. Us. Up.

3. Not a fan of hormones but still want hecka effective protection against unintended pregnancies? The Copper IUD, also known as Paragard, is a hormonal free LARC. It is inserted into the uterus and is over 99% effective at preventing unintended pregnancies. The Paragard uses copper, a metal, which effectively kills sperm. Kinda cool, right?

4. Spontaneity, baby. Imagine: you and your partner are in the heat of the moment but wait, what’s that? Worrying you forgot to take the pill? Forgot to change the patch? With LARCs, you can keep the mood going without having so much to worry about. Let the vibe continue. BUT – and this is a big but -- LARCs do not protect you or your partner(s) against Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). You and your partner(s) should get tested regularly and use an external or internal condom to help prevent the spread of STIs like chlamydia.

5. No one has to know. Birth control means many things to many people. Whatever reason you’re using birth control for, that’s up to you. LARCs are inside your body so they’re private. Want to share your IUD or Nexplanon story? Go for it! Maybe you’d rather not? Awesome. And that level of self-autonomy is *chef’s kiss*.

LARCs are a great choice for anyone with a uterus who is looking to prevent unintended pregnancies. Whether it’s the implant or an IUD, LARCs have several benefits that make them contraception superheroes. Are you interested in learning more about LARCs or another form of birth control?
